What is the VGBA-2008 act?

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA-2008) was enacted in 2008 to improve safety measures in public and private swimming pools and spas. It was named after Virginia Graeme Baker, who tragically lost her life in a hot tub drowning incident due to a faulty drain cover. The VGBA-2008 requires all public pools and spas to have anti-entrapment drain covers and other safety features, such as automatic shut-off switches, to prevent entrapment and drowning accidents. Commercial pool and spa operators are responsible for regularly inspecting and maintaining their facilities to comply with the law and ensure safety. Moreover, the VGBA-2008 established a grant program to support state and local governments in enhancing their pool and spa safety initiatives. Public pool and spa operators must also provide safety information to patrons, including swimming techniques and the importance of adult supervision. By implementing the VGBA-2008, entrapment, and drowning accidents have significantly decreased in both public and private swimming pools and spas. It has also raised awareness about pool and spa safety, highlighting the need for proper maintenance and inspections.
